Tulum

Ruins on a cliff, jungle hotels, cenotes

Tulum went from fishing village to global brand in about fifteen years. The beach road is now a strip of design hotels, jungle restaurants and beach clubs where the aesthetic is bamboo, linen and candlelight, and the bill is New York. The ruins remain the only Mayan city built on the coast, and seeing them at 8 a.m. before the buses is still one of the great moments in Mexico.

The new airport (2023) and the Maya Train made it easier to reach. Go for the cenotes, the Sian Ka'an biosphere and the town side of Tulum, which is cheaper, friendlier and where the good taco stands are.
