Guadalajara & Tequila
Mariachi, tequila and Mexico's second city
Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco and the source of almost everything the world thinks of as Mexican: mariachi, tequila, charrería and the wide-brimmed hat. It is a big, prosperous city with a walkable colonial center, Orozco's murals in the Hospicio Cabañas, and the crafts village of Tlaquepaque on its edge.
An hour west, the blue agave fields around the town of Tequila are a UNESCO landscape, and the distillery tours (José Cuervo, Herradura, and small family houses) are the best day trip in the state. From Guadalajara it is a spectacular five-hour drive down to Puerto Vallarta through the Sierra Madre.
