Mazatlán was Mexico's original Pacific resort long before Vallarta or Cabo, and for a while it was forgotten. The last fifteen years changed that: the nineteenth-century historic center was restored building by building, Plazuela Machado became one of the prettiest squares in the country, and a new highway put it four hours from Durango and the whole northern interior.
It is still cheaper than the other Pacific resorts, the seafood is the best on the coast (this is where the shrimp fleet lives) and the Carnival is the third largest in the world. The Golden Zone hotels are dated; stay in the old town instead.
